points. You have read articles, viewed websites, viewed videos, and performed activities. Use this
discussion session to talk about what you found most important or most interesting.

Your nation has a population of senior citizens that rivals the U.S. in number and demographics.
Likewise, the U.S. and your country have similar long term care (LTC) problems. Some of the challenges
that have arisen are below.
Are LTC beds the only place to put our seniors? Are there other alternatives that are more cost-efficient?
Given all the issues of poor quality in many LTCs, do we really even want to keep traditional nursing
homes as an option? What might elderly people really want? What are younger people willing to support
financially? What role might pharmaceutical products have in managing age-related issues? What would
be the best way for people to age out into death?

As you think about answers to those questions, there is another level of analysis that looks at the ethics of
old age. For example, do you think that everyone has the right to use all your nation’s services (Medicare,
in the U.S.) they want – regardless of the decisions made about their health when they were younger? In
other words, should all elderly people share an equal right to Federally supported healthcare even if they
did not share the same level of responsibility in their earlier choices regarding food, exercise, drugs, and
alcohol?
A second question to consider is whether or not your government (U.S. Federal government, in the U.S.)
should have any voice in restricting one’s personal choices about dying. Should everyone have the right
to die when they want to, regardless of the situation or reasons? Who and how should an end-of-life
decision be made when the person is not in possession of their full faculties?
As the president of your nation, outline a strategy to resolve the problems above. Because you are
continuing to assist the U.S. in improving its healthcare system, it is imperative that you provide the
foundation on why you answered the questions the way you did so the U.S. legislators are able to
develop a strategy that aligns with the healthcare model you developed.
Discuss with your fellow students the pros and cons of the different aspects of your strategy.
