In your readings on some of the major ideas of the modern era, many of the overarching theories are teleologies (Marxism, fascism, Fukuyama). Your objective in this formal paper is to examine the notion of teleology in the modern era – does a sense of history having a goal or purpose help us understand the human experience, or does a teleology distort our understanding of the past and present? It’s impossible to cover all of the chronology/events of the modern era (defined as the period after the end of the French Revolution and Napoleon’s empire), so pick and choose illustrative case studies of examples.
