For this first paper, I want you to pick a specific instance from your life where you have gone through some aspects of the socialization process, (or put another way, were socialized into a new culture) and write about it/analyze it using a range of the different concepts and materials we’ve considered for these units of the course.  Your relevant class material here will be the information on culture and on socialization.

I’m intentionally leaving this assignment rather “open ended.”  Of course, we’ll talk about it in class, but I can offer a few pieces of advice here.

1. Make sure you pick an example that will allow you to bring in a variety of different socialization concepts.
2. While you certainly do not (and really cannot) include every sub-concept of the socialization process and culture that we have looked at, I will be looking to see how you use a range of concepts.  It is not enough, for example, to say “When I started High School I had to learn how to play a lot of new roles” and leave it at that.  I want to see you bring in a range of concepts. You can certainly focus more on culture, or more on socialization, but you must bring in both culture and socialization to some extent in you paper

GUIDELINES AND SUGGESTIONS FOR PAPER ONE

Stylistic and Compositional Guidelines 

-While this is not W131 (meaning that grammar and composition are not my main concerns), I will expect you to follow basic rules of college-level writing.

-Stay within the word limit – I DO NOT want a 1700 word paper

-I do not care if it is single or double spaced, but would prefer you use a standard size and style font.

-You do not need to include a bibliography/reference page.  The only time I  would ask for a standard citation is if you use material not assigned specifically for our class (something that is not at all required to get a top-level score).

Suggestions to Follow/Pitfalls to Avoid

    I think this paper is both an easy and difficult paper to write, in that it requires you to use a rather straightforward set of concepts, but is easy to stray into writing something not sufficiently sociological.  Below are a few suggestions that were talked about in class, but (re)emphasized here.

The first thing to make sure to do is to choose an appropriate example.  Your example must fit one basic criteria – be an instance from your life where you learned how to play a new role/hold a new status through informal social interaction.  As long as it fits into that framework, any one example is as good as another. Topics such as starting a new job, starting a new school, joining a sports team, or attending a new church all could work very well.

It is better to choose an example that is narrow and specific, rather than broad and general.  Coming up with a narrowly-crafted example (maybe going through a sorority ritual, going to your first party where alcohol was served, or attending the first social event with new co-workers) allows you to talk specifically, and in some detail, about the event, allowing it to clearly serve as an illustration of various aspects of the socialization process. The next thing to do is make sure you are not just telling me a story.  While some narrative detail of course needs to be present, do not fall into the trap of just telling me what happened, without using the various socialization process concepts.  As I said in class, a good test to make sure you are not doing this is to read your paper when you’re about done, and ask yourself: “Could I have written most of this without ever having taken this class?”  If the answer is yes, you do not have a sufficient paper.

On the other hand, make sure you do not just laundry-list every culture and socialization process concept you can.  You can’t include all of them in the limited space you have.  What I am looking for is for you to use a range of the culture and socialization process concepts as a set of tools to tell your story with.  The challenge of this paper is to determine which sub-set (meaning some!) of concepts will work best to tell your story with.  For example, if yours has an example of a ritual, explain in your own words what a ritual is, and then why your personal-life example is an illustration of that concept.  Think in terms of presenting a “complete story” from your life, but punctuated/told with the various culture and socialization process concepts that apply to it.
